Sooooo beautifully played, even a year later I enjoy coming back to it. People say that Knopfler always has all the time in the world hanging back and chill, not rushing but always getting there… you have the same great chill timing, which is why this works so perfectly. Bravo!

I’ve been informed that the Cimbalom you can hear on “Mr Solomons Said” is not real, instead, it was played (Synthesized? Sampled?) by Guy Fletcher. Since nobody is credited on the album playing Cimbalom, which I knew already, then it means only one thing - they fooled me. Good job! Also, credited on the album is Greg Leisz playing pedal steel, and I assume the pedal steel part is this “tremolo guitar” part at the beginning and the end of the song. There is only so much I can hear or do, and it always feels great to be reminded of my mistakes. Pavel.

Another wonderful treatment, thank you, Pavel. The cimbalom, whether it appears in this tune truly or synthesized, was invented by Czech brothers, József and Venzel Schunda who, although they weren’t quite the musicians George and Harry were, did create various instruments in their workshop in Pest, Hungary, which was eventually closed during World War II, well after their deaths. Of course Mark’s father was forced to escape Hungary around that time, to evade persecution, crossing through Czechoslovakia I seem to recall David mentioning, to find himself in Scotland, then Newcastle. Perhaps these locales provide some influences, perhaps not. We often hear of the effect that Scottish music has had on Mark’s tune What It Is, or the famous intervals that apparently appear in our maestro’s Irish-infused tunes, so is it too tenuous to suggest that the cimbalom may be imbedded in his bag of tricks, or junkyard as he calls it, providing as much influence as Uncle Kingley’s boogie woogie piano? Perhaps not. Still it’s all good stuff again, Pavel, and a chance to brag a little about my Czech heritage on the side.

Hello Pavel. Actually it's not a cimbalon what sounds at the start of the song. Guy said they recorded one but they didn't used it so probably what we listen is Guy playing that sound with his synths, same like he did when playing live 5.15.a.m. when he played with his synths sithar sounds...
